Happy Piddletractor Day!

It’s May 20th and that can mean only one thing: It’s time for a playdate with Grandma Sparrow at his Piddletractor Birthday Party. Each year on this day, we look back to when Grandma entered our lives and introduced us all to his world of Piddletractor. His Piddletractor Orchestra weaves a kaleidoscopic soundscape of a story about Grandma’s missing nephew, the clown prince Alewishus. Along the way, we meet Tristan Wimbley, Scrimpa, the Oryoman, and countless other characters direct from creator and musician Joe Westerlund’s imagination. Clocking in at 33 minutes, this psychedelic children’s song-cycle for adults says a lot while saying nothing at all. It befuddles us while touching us at our core. It challenges – as we believed in 2014 and we still believe today – the definition of what a record can be in the 21st century.

Appropriately enough, Bizarre Magazine at the time called it “Album of the month times ten!” The Village Voice said it’s “Gloriously freaky…super-fun.” SPIN adjectivized it as “nostalgic, futuristic, hilarious, profound, disturbing, ecstatic, ridiculous, and brilliant” (appending a 9 out of 10 rating to boot).

Grandma Sparrow & His Piddletractor Orchestra is instantly timeless, in that it belongs to no time. Three years later, it sounds just as fresh, bizarre, and perfect as it did on May 20th, 2014.
