Trey Pollard – “Fixed Ideas: I”
Trey Pollard has unveiled the next single from his contemporary classical debut album Antiphone. Produced by Matthew E. White, Antiphone will be released on November 16.
Of the piece “Fixed Ideas: I,” Pollard says:
Fixed Ideas: I is from a set of siblings pieces for chamber strings and piano that are overly concerned with some aspect of their own composition. A bit like accepting someone for not just their redeeming qualities, but all their faults too, these pieces are allowed to wallow a bit in their neuroses. This one in particular is fixated on its own form; it wants desperately to make sense from left to right and for all the little stops along the way to have some purpose.
You may recognize “Fixed Ideas: I.” In May, Pollard and Spacebomb teamed up with The Line of Best Fit to premiere part of the piece via a live stream of the recording session from Montrose Recording in Richmond, VA. Not even the composer had heard the music yet – this was the first time a group of musicians had performed it, and the stream allowed the listener to hear the music as it was rehearsed, perfected, and recorded. Viewers took a rare, intimate front-row seat as Pollard conducted and instructed his players – a 16-piece orchestra comprised of string instruments and a pianist – while they rehearsed, and ultimately recorded, his debut compositions. It’s not often that outsiders get such a close look inside the creative process of recording chamber music, especially not for a composer’s anticipated debut. Watch the archived live stream here.
